SUMMARY

The GIS Specialist provides cartographical expertise to support assigned GIS projects through application of professional knowledge and skill in cartographical practices, processes, and techniques.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following:

  • Use CAD/GIS expertise to develop unique applications of cartographic/CAD theory/principles to solve both short- and long-range problems for the base GeoBase mapping system concerning base development, facility engineering, and day-to-day operations and maintenance management activities.
  • Verifies each Base GIS layer and Base Tab maps are correctly populated with required data
  • Evaluate request to determine the best format for analysis/display and ensures inclusion of appropriate data to fulfill the request.
  • Ensures Headquarters requests for data calls or improvements to GIS system receive top priority and meets established completion deadlines
  • Provide support to base GIS users by installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of base GIS software and specialized hardware.
  • Monitors base GIS system to identify and recommend areas where system improvements of hardware/software could improve performance of the system.
  • Maintains record of GIS related software remains under license and always available.
  • Inputs drawings to S-file and floor Plan Data in GIS/dBase formatted output.
  • Ensures floor plans are updated annually by addition of any space changes and inclusion of new facilities.
  • Reviews and verifies data prior to notifying Real Estate date is available for their review to add proper Real Estate codes to the new areas and forward the file to Headquarters.
  • Ensures data collection is promptly transferred to the GIS system.
  • Assist with the review of initial requests for work
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

This position will not have supervisory/management authority.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A degree in Cartography or Geography or a GIS Certificate required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience performing the work/tasks detailed above is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Utilizing and applying computer software including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • United States citizen with a clear background for government security investigation with the ability to obtain a Clearance or Common Access Card (CAC)
  • Familiarity to instructions outlined in the 32 series Civil Engineer AFIs is preferred
  • The ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screen

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is primarily performed in a secured federal office setting, a controlled office environment as well as working outside in a job site environment.
