Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB is seeking a growth-oriented, entrepreneurial, and experienced engineer to serve as the VDOT Transportation Design Program Executive (PX). The successful candidate will play a critical role in driving the growth of the VDOT Transportation Design practice to increase market share across the state of Virginia. As the company continues to grow and undertake projects of greater scale and complexity, the VDOT Transportation Design PX provides high-level strategic guidance and support to Project Managers (PMs) on large-scale, complex transportation projects, enabling PMs to focus on project execution while ensuring the overall success of projects. This person will collaborate closely with PMs, clients, and project teams, working throughout the project life cycle from pursuit to close-out to ensure seamless delivery, client satisfaction, and project excellence.

Responsibilities

    Leverage relationships to develop and maintain trusted adviser relationships with clients at all levels of the VDOT organization as well as set the vision for growth and lead market awareness.
  • Be highly externally visible at conferences and industry forums, including involvement in professional associations, conferences and boards to strengthen VHB's design reputation.
  • Contribute to VHB's external visibility through articles, social media posts, and thought leader initiatives such as VHB Viewpoints, whitepapers, and podcasts.
  • Work closely with our Mid-Atlantic regional and office leadership and other local staff in the development of targeted client service action plans for VDOT.
  • Provide strategic guidance during the project pursuit process, including opportunity identification, scope development, risk identification, and defining project goals.
  • Advise on project approach, scope, cost, and schedule, identifying opportunities for innovative solutions and strategic teaming partnerships.
  • Develop new project opportunities and provide key insight for proposal submissions.
  • Attend meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to establish their needs and discuss design/permitting issues with them.
  • Oversee and lead project delivery teams and provide technical guidance for the design of transportation projects.
  • Participate in VHB's Alternative Delivery Task Force, contributing to the development and implementation of guidelines and best practices for alternative delivery throughout VHB's footprint.
  • Potentially serve as Project Executive or Design Manager on mega projects across VHBs footprint.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong track record of overseeing successful VDOT project delivery

  • Expert knowledge of VDOT processes and procedures
  • Desire to mentor and train design staff in evaluating project risks, client expectations and overall successful project delivery

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or related degree (a master's may be substituted for 2 years of experience)
  • 15+ years of professional civil engineering experience focused on delivery of complex VDOT Transportation Design Services; 20+ years of experience highly preferred
  • Virginia Professional Engineer licensure required
  • Demonstrated supervisor and mentoring skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proposal writing and presentation skills, public speaking ability, and problem-solving skills are required
  • Technical proficiency and ability to understand and navigate complex projects
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with diverse clients and project teams
  • Ability to maintain a high-level view of project and client goals while providing strategic guidance
  • Solid project management skills, including planning, budgeting, and risk management
  • Objective mindset to identify project challenges and develop appropriate solutions
  • Market and client knowledge to align project strategies with client drivers and expectations
