Position Description

DC Prep, a high-performing group of public charter schools, is seeking exceptional individuals to serve as teachers in our Extended Learning Program (ELP). ELP teachers will work at DC Prep’s Edgewood and Benning Elementary Campuses with students in PreSchool-5th grade. Individuals interested in pursuing a career in education and/or with an interest, love, and commitment to working with 3-year-olds through 5th graders are encouraged to apply.
 
Positions are part-time. Hours are Monday-Thursday from 3:45-6:15 p.m. and Friday from 2:45-6:15 p.m. Aftercare teachers are paid at a rate of $10-$28/per hour, depending on experience and background. All applicants must be 18 years or older and possess a high school diploma.

Now in its eighth year, DC Prep has built an excellent early childhood, elementary and middle school program and demonstrated uncommon success in student achievement, and organizational development. With a dual focus on rigorous academics and character development DC Prep is ensuring that its graduates have the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for success in competitive high schools and colleges. Currently serving students in PreSchool through 8th grade at three campuses, DC Prep will grow to 10 schools enrolling 10% of public school students in Wards 5-8. RESPONSIBILITIES OVERVIEW

  • Lead academically enriching and engaging activities using a holistic curriculum program;
  • Assist students with homework and study skills;
  • Develop and foster positive social interactions among children;
  • Adhere to applicable safety procedures;
  • Exercise control and maintain classroom discipline; and
  • Provide a supportive and caring environment for children.
 

SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS

  • Demonstrated skill and competence working with children, preferably aged 3-years through 5th grade;
  • A passion for teaching and building relationships with students and families;
  • Special skills or interests in sports, youth activities, art, etc. a plus;
  • A desire to work as a team player with other teachers, staff, and parents;
  • A continuous desire for personal improvement;
  • Maturity and personal stability sufficient for a demanding position;
  • Positive attitude and very strong work ethic; and
  • Ability to handle calmly and efficiently situations ranging from routine to emergency.
 
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Aged 18 or older;
  • Possess a high school diploma and one of the following: 24 college credit hours, certification of training in education from a vocational high school, or 1 year supervised experience working in a DC Child Development Center;
 
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • Aftercare teachers are paid at a rate of $10-$28 per hour, depending on experience and background.
